Prison Project
Chair: Dr Erika Duffell
The aim of the Prison Project is to improve prevention, testing and treatment regarding hepatitis C in prisons, set an implementation plan and identify funds to implement the plan.
The strategy will also include Styal prison as these female prisoners are largely from the Greater Manchester area and the current arrangements are for these prisoners to be referred to services in Greater Manchester.
The main objectives of the Prison project are:
-
To improve current preventative services aimed at tackling blood borne viruses in the prison setting
-
To increase awareness of blood borne viruses in the prison
-
To help increase the number of prisoners vaccinated against hepatitis B
-
To increase the number of at risk prisoners who are tested for hepatitis C infection
-
To ensure individuals with hepatitis C infection are appropriately referred to relevant services
-
To increase the number of prisoners who have chronic hepatitis C infection receiving anti-viral treatment
